Professional Development Special Topic: Overcoming Racism

Power Skills

Speaker: Dr. Ariel Lewis, Ph.D., LGPC, NCC

Therapist and Adjunct Professor at Loyola University Maryland

Seminar Title: Marching On: A Discussion on Overcoming Racism in Our Communities

This presentation will address the historical and ongoing impact of racism on Black Americans. The speaker will then provide both general and workplace specific guidance for addressing racism. Special attention will be given to managing mental health and self-care amid a double pandemic. Tips for effective allyship will also be provided.

Dr. Lewis’ dissertation topic “Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Phenomenological Investigation of African American Millennials’ Views on Historical Trauma” addresses gaps in existing research regarding how persons who identify as African American and/or Black are impacted by the traumas of the past, as well as ongoing racism in the present. Additionally, it highlights the potential influence of grief, coping, and ethnic identity on how today’s African Americans process historical trauma. Her hopes for leveraging this research for future projects are rooted in a desire to further explicate the manner in which trauma has influenced the progression of Black people in the U.S., while also building their resilience. Most recently, Dr. Lewis has been honored to share her expertise with diverse audiences via speaking engagements and professional consultations.
