Edward J. Certain (Ed) is a Systems Engineer at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he has devoted a significant amount of time supporting Special Operations Forces based at Ft. Liberty, NC (formerly known as Ft. Bragg). Ed previously spent over 27 years in the U.S. Army with over 20 years as an operator in several Special Operations Organizations. He then served in the civil service as a Strategic Planner and Current Operations Officer for the Joint Special Operations Command. While supporting operational organizations on Ft. Liberty, Ed focused on identifying operational needs, gap analysis, CONOPS
development, Scenario development, and requirements development and analysis.
Ed is the Chief Engineer for the Tactical Intelligent Systems Group and is responsible for the technical quality of projects developed within the group and ensuring development team has identified technical risks and that scheduled reviews are conducted. He works on efforts involved in developing complex AI systems and is a strong advocate for implementing systems engineering processes and MBSE into these development efforts.
Ed lives in Jackson Springs, NC and he is an avid horseback rider competing in Reining,
Ranch Riding, and Western Pleasure. He has numerous Military decorations and awards, and numerous civilian awards to include the CJCS Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
