February 2020 Richmond Dinner Meeting

Ways of Working

Speaker: Kirk Westwood

Talk Title: Empowering Innovation through encouraged failure and PROBLEM management

Brief DescriptionIt is a common practice to assign a prescribed solution to a perceived problem.  We assign tasks based on our own assessment of a situation.  In management it seems less and less common for us to assign someone else to assess a problem and propose solutions.

All too common a manager at the center of an organization acts as the head of the octopus and expects that each leg will enact their will, the way the want it done, at the speed they want it done, with the outcome they require.

In this talk we’ll explore turning that model on its head.  Each arm acting independently bringing the manager at the head only deliverables, and top level decisions.

Instead of managing our teams with “the way it should be done,” let us instead establish “what we need to happen,” and encourage new and potentially terribly ideas of how to get there.
