Disciplined Agile Scrum Master and PMI Agile Certified Practitioner - Which One to Choose? As a project manager do you feel overwhelmed with the availability of several agile certifications? This is the dilemma most project managers are facing these days. They are getting confused about whether to opt for the Disciplined Agile Scrum Master or go for the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner certification. If you are also facing the same question, this will article will discuss which certification program is better suited for you.   Disciplined Agile Scrum Master Certification The Disciplined Agile Scrum Master Certification is better suited for those project managers who are looking to kick-start their agile journey by exploring different strategies and approaches such as Kanban, Scrum, and SAFe® along with the Disciplined Agile toolkit to guide their team in choosing the best way of working (WoW) in any situation. Because the Disciplined Agile Scrum Master Certification program is for project managers who are starting their agile journey, no professional agile experience is required for this agile certification. Moreover, there are no minimum eligibility criteria for enrolling in the Disciplined Agile Scrum Master Certification. Therefore, it is open to anyone interested in learning the agile methodology. PMI Agile Certified Practitioner Certification The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner Certification is better suited for those project managers who are looking to explore several approaches to agile such as Kanban, Lean, Scrum, test-driven development (TDD), and extreme programming (XP). Moreover, this agile certification is also suitable for those project managers who are looking to understand how to coach teams for improved productivity. Being said that, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner Certification requires you to have 2,000 hours of working experience on general project management and 1,500 hours of working experience on agile projects. In other words, the PMI-ACP is for those project managers who have already kick-started their career in agile and are looking to certify the skills they have developed on the job. Therefore, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner Certification program is for those who have experience as an agile practitioner. Other Skills Needed to Get Certified Obviously, when you are thinking to work in an agile team environment, you need to have technical skills such as engineering and coding. Apart from that, you also need to have soft skills such as emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication along with the understanding of how an agile team works collectively to achieve overall business objectives. Final Thoughts While the Disciplined Agile Scrum Master Certification is best suited for anyone who is starting out their agile journey, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner Certification is for experienced professionals only. You need to have at least 3,500 hours of experience combined in general as well as agile project management. Therefore, based upon your experience in the field of agile, you can choose which certification program is better suited for your professional career. A fun and productive networking session was held on Wednesday, March 24. The goal of the session was to help participants expand their networks of local project managers, have some fun – and win prizes – and provide feedback about how – and where- they would like to have our in-person meetings. We shared our strategic plan for the Charlottesville Area group: Facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experience through engaging speakers at our monthly meetings Provide Networking Opportunities to enable members to expand and diversify their networks Give back to the community – of project managers as well as to our local Charlottesville area communities Identify needs and opportunities, such as job postings, test prep, mentors – to enable you to grow as a project manager Then – on to the fun activities. We began the session with networking using the speed networking tool called Glimpse.  Participants experienced 3-minute ‘get acquainted’ sessions with about five different people. The next activity was Scattergories, ably led by Chris Kontalonis. He created customized categories – for project managers as well as places in the Charlottesville area.  Our practice session was with the letter “P” – but the wheel spin stopped on K for the game.  Our winner of a $25 gift card was Elma Lotter; congratulations! To gain an understanding of the needs and wants of the group, we conducted three polls, and following each, participants added ideas in the group chat. Polling and Chatting to Provide Direction The first poll focused on meeting formats and topics.  Participants voted for as many formats as they desired. Panel discussions were of greatest interest, followed by case studies from project managers. Examples were provided for both Soft Skills and Team Dynamics, as follows: Soft Skills such as leadership development, emotional intelligence, using DISC to manage clients, etc. Team Dynamics such as establishing a fair and equitable work environment, communication, managing cross-generational teams, etc. The chat session following the poll provided a wide variety of topics for speakers: Effective Risk Management, Persuasive Communication & Negotiation, PMO Development, Expectations Management, Infographics to tell a story, Effective Tools for Managing Scope, a variety of topics around Agile, Project Management Consulting, Organizational Change Management, Influencing and Interesting Career Paths. We’ll use this list to recruit our speakers – and we welcome volunteers! The second poll requested input on meeting locations. Given that we’re a relatively small group compared with the Richmond group, we can consider a variety of options.  Participants voted for as many locations as they desired. Meeting in local restaurants or academic settings were of greatest interest. About half were interested in meeting in a conference room of a local business.  For meeting locations outside of restaurants, the CVC chapter provides a catered meal. There was only one topic in the chat:  Parking!!! One person suggested Shadwells, a local restaurant in the Pantops area that does have a lot a parking! The third poll focused on an important aspects of local CVC chapters: opportunities to both meet and get to know other local project managers as well as to give back, both to the chapter and the community.  As indicated by the poll results, there was a high level of interest in a variety of give-back activities that would also provide opportunities for networking. For each poll topic, suggestions were provided, as follows: Giving back to local nonprofit with a work day – food pantry, community garden, etc. Mentoring local PMs – with projects or prep for PMP (or other PMI exams) Community activity such as sponsoring 5K to benefit a charity, working as a group at Habitat for Humanity, cleaning up trails such as the Ivy Creek Wilderness, etc. Managing a donation drive – such as school supplies, warm coats, other needs of community organizations Chat responses showed interest in these activities: Offers of IT support for whatever activity we do, mentoring, helping with a volunteer project, being a leader of a volunteer project – and a request for a central place to share ideas.  (We’ll work on that!) Time for the Magic Wand! We wrapped up our activities by providing each participant with a virtual magic wand! Participants filled the white board with great ideas! Networking Networking to develop my PM skills Networking to meet new people PM job announcements Enriching PM Skills Role playing challenging PM situations and decision making PMPs speaking about their projects Share Negotiation/Persuasive communication tips Mentoring and being mentored Project with a problem that we help with Sharing stories PMP Jeopardy Game as a refresher Would be neat to hear from local businesses and services Viewing project management in different fields/industries Would be neat to hear from local businesses and services Helping with the new PMP exam Fun activities Project field trip – Monticello, Whole Food, WalMart Distribution center Meet outside with a picnic and a speaker A steak dinner! Other ideas Mix of in-person and virtual even after pandemic ends And to end our fun evening, we spun the raffle wheel! And the winner of a $25 gift card was Hans Hokans. Congratulations! “I am honored to be a part of PMICVC (Richmond and C ‘Ville.) volunteers. Every day we recognize that life outside our virtual offices, life in Central Virginia, has been jammed packed. We, our friends and families are all navigating politics, pandemic and projects. With all this, I am thankful and inspired by the many projects our Central Virginia Chapter of volunteers has completed or pushed forward in the first quarter. Based on feedback from our member community some of these projects include adding professional development courses for our members covering PMP, Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM) and Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP).  In March, we co-hosted a lunchtime event with PMI Rochester and will have more events with Hampton Roads, Northeast Ohio and more opportunities to earn PDU’s and network virtually with professionals from other parts of the country.  Our Volunteer Recognition Event committee developed and executed a plan to move us to a virtual celebration and in March, they managed a project that took even more coordination than a face-to-face event. Very well done! During this event, we had the opportunity to appreciate our volunteers and celebrate our 2020 Volunteer of the Year, Danielle Dodge.  It is rare to have someone so impactful, so quickly and also be a consistently giving volunteer.  Please see more about Danielle here and if you want to experience working with Danielle please join us as a volunteer to experience her exceptional servant leadership as well as the servant leadership that our team exudes. We are looking forward to an equally productive 2nd quarter with more vacations, vaccinations and volunteers. Our volunteers are the wind that carries us day after day and year after year. Did you know that the week of April 18-24, 2021is National Volunteer Week?  Please look for more opportunities to engage with us and our community around these days.  We will also share are Volunteer of the Quarter later this month as we get closer to April 20th, Volunteer Recognition Day. Join us and experience why one of our volunteers shared this quote with me “I am honored to be a part of PMICVC (Richmond and C ‘Ville.) volunteers. Please don’t hesitate to ask me to volunteer at any project, either in Richmond or C ’Ville.”  All I can say is, DITTO. Please stay safe and well and I look forward to serving you this quarter and seeing you  in the near future as we follow our CDC and State of VA Guidelines on Covid-19. The event was phenomenal, and everyone that attended felt very special and expressed interest in hosting the event there again. Suresh Raju was recognized as our 2019 Volunteer of the Year. In February, Our Board members attended the Regional Leadership meeting. We held a raffle for a volunteer to attend and were able to have an additional volunteer member participate in this event. This year we implemented an ‘Exceptional Volunteer of the Quarter”. Here are the individuals that were recognized this year: Leslie DeBruyn, PMP (1st quarter) Jennifer Romero-Greene (2nd quarter) David Maynard (3rd quarter) Our 4th quarter volunteer will be recognized at our Volunteer Recognition event in January 2020, in addition to our 2020 Volunteer of the Year. People are faced with more uncertainty and ambiguity in the workplace than ever before. Although we tend to think of work in terms of projects, activities, and deliverables, the brain experiences the workplace first and foremost as a social system. The latest research in neuroscience sheds new light on what drives human behavior. Recent studies suggest that there are five domains that activate reward or threat circuitry in the human brain - status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. Understanding these domains can explain how people respond in social situations and why change is often met with resistance.  This presentation will explore some of these research findings and the application in a project setting. Project managers will learn how to use these findings to improve stakeholder collaboration, foster engagement and increase commitment to projects, to deliver the greatest business value.  Registration ends Tuesday evening (8PM), November 12, 2019. Speaker: Kay Fudala Kay is currently an Organizational Change Management Lead at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Throughout her career in IT, Kay has focused on driving adoption and boosting utilization of technology transformation and process improvement initiatives.
