May 2017 President's Letter

From the President....

May is a month of transition: it is the last full month of Spring, the end of the academic year at most universities and colleges, and the end of May brings the beginning of summer activities and vacations. Since 1963, President Kennedy proclaimed May as “Senior Citizens Month, “and then President Carter proclaimed May as “Older Americans Month” (some believe that the Romans named May after the Latin word for elders, maiores). May marks a transition for PMICVC. Our Board Nominating Committee, Cindy Parcell, PMP and Ron Younger, PMP, are transitioning from speaking with members to fill the slate of candidates for next year’s board openings (if you are interested in the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Communications, or Vice President of Education), speak with any Board member, or complete the nomination form. The candidates will speak to members at the June Richmond Diner meeting.

Another transition is underway on the Board - I shall be stepping down as President at the end of June, and Kelly Evans, PMP will take over as President. As many may know, I have been a part-time Ph.D. student at the VCU School of Business. I will be completing my degree in August and moving to Tampa, Florida to join the faculty of the School of Business at the University of Tampa. It has been my honor to serve the Central Virginia project management community in various roles in PMICVC, and especially as President for the past 18-months. It will be difficult to leave my friends and colleagues in PMICVC.

Sharon Robbins, PMP and Gail Gilstrap, PMP are busy with the planning and recruiting of volunteers to assist with the PMICVC Symposium, which will be held at the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center on September 13 to 15. The Symposium will provide you with an opportunity to earn PDUs by improving your Project Management skills and your personal career development knowledge. Sharon and Gail cannot make this happen by themselves; they need your assistance. See the list of volunteering opportunities below and let Sharon or Gail know which one you could help with. I can promise that you will be meeting great folks; that your efforts will make a demonstrable difference; and that you will have a wonderful time working with the Symposium team.
